There are many varied types of depression. Even though many Americans suffer from depression, they don't know it or if they do, they won't admit it even to themselves. Studies estimate that at least 14 million Americans suffer from depression. It is also estimated that less than a third of those affected will ever seek treatment. What are the reasons? Mental illness is a scary concept, and that's where depression has been filed. Nobody wants that label applied to them. There was a time in our history when those who suffered mental illness were shunned by society. When depression became apparent in people they were often sent away to clinics for the mentally ill. Times have changed now, thank goodness. However, old stereotypes have not. Many Americans keep their problem to themselves, motivated by this.

Many elements make up depression. It isn't easy to diagnose. You have to take into consideration the chemical imbalances in the brain, genetics, biology and even the environment surrounding the individual. Depression can stem from drug or alcohol abuse, or even from simple everyday stress. These are all factors in causes depression. So what are some of the treatments and cures available for those that are inflicted? There are many options for treatment and even cure, just as there are many causes for depression. Which option is the best for someone who suffers with depression may be dependent on each individual on a case-to-case basis

Many claim they have a cure for depression. Methods of treatment that are safe and that work to cure depression do exist. When considering which option is best there are a few considerations that must be examined. Has the method being considered been clinically proven to be effective in the treatment of depression? Is a prescription drug or herbal treatment being applied in the proper quantity to show results? Have high quality control standards been used when accepting the method? Let's examine some of the more popular cures.

For years the typical treatment for many forms of depression has been prescription drugs and psychotherapy. To treat depression a typical type of drug recommended is selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, SSRI. One of the most popular, Prozac, was first used in the United States in 1988. Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celexa, and Luvox are just some of those that followed it. Case history shows all of these to be effective. These drugs have a lot of side effects. That is why natural cures are becoming so popular today. St Johns Wort extract is one herbal cure gaining popularity quickly. In order to work it must contain between 3 and 5 % hyperforin. Studies and actual cases show it to be as effective as Prozac but with fewer side effects. Seeking a cure is important, but so is convincing people to get help. Seek medical care at once if you or a loved one suffer from depression.
