Each week the popular Internet radio talk show "Sins of Omission" with Host Paulie Abeles features in-depth hour-long interviews with newsmakers designed to give listeners insight into current events 'beyond the nightly news'.
TONIGHT:
When Al Gore's movie, "An Inconvenient Truth" was released in 2007, many environmentalists believed its huge celebrity and broad impact heralded a new era of attention and activism regarding the issue of global warming. However, as of 2008 carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels had increased a whooping 40% globally since 1990, and satellites now offer conclusive proof that sea levels have risen 80% over the predictions of scientific models, as the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets steadily lose mass. Treaty negotiations in Copenhagen to set international standards stalled over the issue of 'climate debt' demanded by many poorer countries from the industrialized nations. And scientists still debate the evidence—which in some cases is subtle and complex enough about the role of human responsibility for climate change to defy easy answers. Curiously, for a topic so vital to ourselves and our planet, according to a recent New York Times article 'the greatest story rarely Told" media coverage of global warming is actually DECREASING- accounting for only 1.5% of all news stories in 2009.
How do we unravel all the conflicting claims? And what will it take to get the media and general public's attention? New York Times journalist Andrew C. Revkin, editor of the New York Times "dotearth" blog and author of "The North Pole Was Here: Puzzles and Perils at the Top of the World" is uniquely qualified to address these issues.
Andrew Revkin has been reporting on the environment for The New York Times since 1995. Before joining The Times, Mr. Revkin was a senior editor of Discover, a staff writer for the Los Angeles Times, and a senior writer at Science Digest. Mr. Revkin has a biology degree from Brown and a Master's degree in journalism from Columbia. He has taught environmental reporting as an adjunct professor at Columbia's Graduate School of Journalism. His most recent book is The North Pole Was Here: Puzzles and Perils at the Top of the World (Kingfisher, 2006). In 2008, he became the first science reporter to win a Chancellor Award for journalistic excellence from Columbia University.
