Acne, often thought to be only a teenager's skin problem, is actually a condition that can affect adults both male and female, although it generally begins during puberty. Taking a proactive approach to treating acne is very important. How you look after your skin every day, along with the treatment you and your doctor select are key steps in your fight to eliminate pimples, preventing scarring and eliminating your acne.
There are a number of acne medications that can be used to treat your acne including over-the-counter acne products like Panoxyl®, or prescription drugs including topical treatments, Accutane® and hormone therapies.
Acne conglobata : A rare form that usually affects males, acne conglobata covers the back, chest, and buttocks with pustules and nodules, which often connect under the skin. Because of this tendency to connect, severe bacterial infection is possible, as well as extensive scarring. Medical attention is required.
Acne cosmetica : As the name implies, it is triggered by topical make-up. Characterized by small pink bumps, acne cosmetica is usually quite mild, with little chance of scarring.
Acne fulminans : A rare and extreme form of acne conglobata, acne fulminans almost always infects males. Symptoms include a sudden onset of pustules and nodules, infected nodules, fever, joint pain, and possible loss of weight or appetite. Acne fulminans is a serious condition and requires prompt medical attention.
Causes of Acne
Other important acne information is in regards to what the causes are, and there are actually quite a few. Basically acne happens when oil glands come to life around puberty, which are stimulated by male hormones from the adrenal glands of both boys and girls. Although oil is a natural substance and usually does not do any harm, when there is a buildup of it, it can be problematic.
Acne TreatmentFood is considered as being a major cause of acne, so you want to steer clear of those foods that are going to cause or aggravate it, such as fatty, deep-fried and sugary foods. Stress is another culprit here, as a lot of time when people find themselves going through stress their hormones start to act up, intensifying the production of acne.
Acne: Pinpoint the Trigger
While acne commonly develops during the preteen and early teen years, it can also arise in young adulthood and persist for years. Studies show women feel more frustrated by acne than men do - adult women even more so than teenage girls. Why? Dealing with a chronic disorder typically associated with puberty can lead to great frustration. But don't despair if you have acne, effective treatment is available.
